Magency Primer Kit

What is Magency?

Magency is a hybrid tabletop RPG combining full tabletop play with an optional companion app for players and the GM, set in a neo-noir fantasy world where magic fuels technology. This world is Nemundir, where corporations trade in power-storing crystals, and a leaking multiverse threatens everyday life.

The Primer Kit is the essential way to try Magency: streamlined core rules, ready-to-play characters, and enough setting material to get both players and the GM to the table, all in two free books.

Small Groups, Big Machine

Underneath the crystal trade and the common market sits a quieter layer: international alliances that have been trading favors for generations, governments keeping secrets out of public view, and a social order where who you know often outweighs what you can do, mechanically represented in the game through the Influence system, where a character's standing in the Elite, Commercial, or Underground circles can open doors no amount of raw skill ever will.

None of this is subtle. It isn't supposed to be. Nemundir isn't an escape from a world run by powerful, insatiable interests, it's the same fight, with a different vocabulary and a much better light show.

You won't win by dismantling the whole system in one campaign. Nobody does. But you can pull one thread, save one district, expose one truth before it gets buried again, and in a hybrid TTRPG built for people who show up week after week, that's usually enough to keep playing.

This is the world your character wakes up in. The rest, who you are, what you're willing to risk, who you're willing to trust, is up to you.

Weave a Web of Consequences

Nemundir’s society is deeply interconnected through a complex weave of curried favors, threats, alliances and feuds. No single person can fully predict the ripple effects of their actions.

Through the political aspects of Faction mechanics, any choice at the table can have narratively impactful consequences. Walk away from a bribe, hand over evidence to the wrong journalist? You may have just lit a fuse without knowing where it leads, only to discover, much later, that it runs straight to a huge pile of explosives.

This is the free Primer Kit

A complete uncolored edition of both the Player's Handbook – Primer and Game Master's – Primer: fully playable, with streamlined content. The fastest way to get to the table.

What's inside:

Player's Handbook

  • Three  ready-to-play characters - pick one up and start playing
  • Three layers define every character:
    - Attributes set your limits
    - Skills determine what you can do
    - Influence decides how far your reach extends across Nemundir
  • A Faction system with exclusive skills tied to who you're aligned with
  • Two unique martial art systems: Gorton and Rapath techniques
  • Three combat modes you can mix and match depending on the table's pace
  • Classless, open-ended character progression: no fixed build paths

Game Master's Book

  • Core mechanics from the GM's side, including three interchangeable combat modes, from tight one-on-one duels to full narrative battles, so you can match the system to the scene
  • Introduction to the rich setting material on the world of Nemundir
  • A ready-to-run introductory scenario to get your table playing in one session
  • Reference tools and practical guidance for running the hybrid format at the table

A Legacy Twenty Years in the Making

Magency continues a story that began in Hungary in 2007, with the original Nemundir tabletop role-playing game. That first rulebook gave Game Masters the tools to run a character's entire life within one campaign, starting as a child, growing into a hero, and, after a fallen hero's death, returning as a transformed undead character through the Book of Crypts expansion, published in 2010. Magency carries that same philosophy of character continuity forward, and is the foundation this hybrid system builds on.

The concept of the universe seems really exciting, but I do regret that the “primer” says nearly nothing about the world: less than 3 pages to introduce the universe! (compared to 11 pages for combat).

The table of contents is false, there are numerous missing sections, and the page numbers don’t match: the PDF contains only 76 pages, compared to the 95+ listed in the table of contents.

This “primer” is just not usable as is. I hope you’ll correct it, because for now it doesn’t make me want to explore it further. Please don’t make me regret my donation.

I am deeply sorry for the mistake. That kind of mismatch between the table of contents and the actual text is definitely not the smooth entry into the setting you deserved.

However I have addressed these issues, and I corrected the discrepancies in the table of contents and missing sections, plus I created new hyperlinks for better user experience. This afternoon, I successfully uploaded the updated, complete PDF files.

Moreover if you want to dive even deeper into the lore and world-building you can check out www.magency.cc. It offers plenty of extra material for free, for instance, if you look at a pre-made character sheet on the site, you can access an interactive map featuring detailed descriptions of various settlements, as well as browse through a comprehensive database of items and services.

And finally thank you for your support!

Many thanks for the quick answer and for correcting the “primer”. I had been looking at the website, but I can’t find the materials you mentioned (characters, interactive map, etc.). Is it strictly tied to the app ?

Yes, the functions I mentioned earlier are all in the webapp.
After you register for free (via the 'Sign In' button in the top right corner of the page), you can access the webapp's basic functions. This means you can choose from the three premade characters and try the GM side as well.
